Let's Talk About Acne

Updated: Jul 11, 2021

Acne is a skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. It causes whiteheads, blackheads, or pimples. Acne is most common among teenagers, though it affects people of all ages.

Types of Acne

Acne may appear as black spots on the surface of the skin and may appear around the nose, the chin, or the cheek area. It happens because the pores on the surface of the skin start to become clogged. This can be caused by bacteria and oil on the skin, ingrown hairs, or it can be related to hormones. They do not get red and inflamed and can be treated topically often from store-bought products. It is recommended that you don’t try to squeeze the blackhead on your own as this may cause permanent scarring.

When the pores get clogged completely this can lead to whiteheads and appear as inflamed and red bumps on the skin. They can show up on the face or back and if caused by ingrown hairs may appear in other places hair grows.

The degree of inflammation determines the size and redness of an acne lesion. It’s important to be patient with your acne treatment. While some treatments may work immediately, you may not see widespread improvement for several months.
