Subtle. Smooth. Undetectable. The best dermal fillers don’t change your face; they enhance the one you already love. That’s why facial contouring with fillers is continuing to increase in popularity. Dermal Fillers, also referred to as “non-surgical face lifts”, offer a beauty boost without the downtime, cost, and risk of going to the surgeon.
Though an exact number isn’t available, estimates show that over 2.5 million people in Canada are seeking out dermal fillers, and, at least if they’re coming to Secret Faces, you’d never know it; another reason this medical aesthetic treatment continues to gain in popularity.
Want a little bit of lip-filler? Concerned about those newly emerging marionette lines? Dermal filler may be the answer you are looking for.
What Are Dermal Fillers?
In essence, dermal fillers are injectable gels that have the ability to smooth, plump, and soften signs of aging. One of the most common compounds found in dermal fillers is hyaluronic acid.
HA (hyaluronic acid) is a naturally occurring substance found in our skin. It plays a significant role in keeping skin hydrated and volumized. Unfortunately, as we age, HA depletes. When HA depletes, so does the skin’s ability to look moisturized, and we’re more likely to look gaunt and older as a result.
There are several types of dermal fillers, each with its own proprietary blend of ingredients. For instance, at Secret Faces, we use Saypha dermal fillers because it’s a highly trusted brand and targets a variety of trouble spots most commonly identified by our clients.

What is “Facial Balancing” and How Can Dermal Fillers Help With It?
There are four major structural components to your face: skin, fat, muscle, and bone. These ideally work in harmony, but as we age, volume loss in some of these structures contributes to signs of aging and a sense of facial imbalance.
When it comes to your skin, what helps it look youthful are collagen and elastin; they keep our skin plump and elastic. Much like hyaluronic acid, collagen, and elastin, these proteins are depleted as we age, ultimately leading to volume loss in the face.
Conditions like chin retrusion, where the chin starts to recede, can begin to develop. Issues like chin retrusion make our facial features look unbalanced, and you may even notice that these changes put your facial features out of balance with one another. Facial contouring with fillers is one way to address this imbalance and is one of many techniques used in facial balancing.
What Dermal Fillers Do and How They Can Help
Products like Saypha® dermal filler are the stand-in for that lost collagen and elastin, and provide you with the “non-surgical face lift” you’re looking for.
Dermal fillers restore lost volume and plump up areas that require it. They can:
● Restore volume to sunken cheeks or temples
● Plump and enhance lips and lip shape with lip filler
● Address nasolabial folds, aka marionette lines
● Provide a sagging skin lift, and fill in wrinkles
● Contour and define areas such as the jawline, cheek, or chin
● Boost the look of your skin, making it look more vital, healthier, and hydrated
● Address problem areas besides the face
Improve facial symmetry across facial features

Are Dermal Fillers Safe?
Injectable fillers are compatible with your skin and manufactured under strict safety protocols. Dermal fillers like Saypha® are clinically tested, Health Canada–approved, and trusted by millions worldwide for safe and effective facial rejuvenation.
If there are safety concerns with fillers, they are primarily reserved for the actual treatment. Pricking a blood vessel, an allergic reaction, or an aesthetician who is overconfident or lacks skills can cause safety concerns. Research your boutique before booking and ensure your provider is fully qualified.
Who Shouldn’t Use Dermal Fillers?
Not every treatment is good for every person. People who should avoid fillers include:
● Those with certain medical conditions, and/or who are undergoing immunosuppressive therapy.
● Women who are pregnant and/or breastfeeding.
● People with skin disease, skin inflammation, or other skin-related problems; if there are non-affected areas, those may be possible to treat.
● You should not get fillers in or on an area that will be undergoing other treatments, such as laser therapy or dermabrasion. Discuss this during your beauty consultation.

How Do I Decide Which Treatment is Right For Me?
It’s not uncommon to have the desire to enhance your appearance but struggle to articulate the specific changes you want to make. You may not know that cheek and chin filler can help balance your profile. That’s okay! This is why you want to go to a clinic with a qualified aesthetician. Whether you’re looking to get fillers for marionette lines and jowls, to get a sagging skin lift, or you just want some lip filler, your medical aesthetician is there to work with you to figure it out.
Ultimately, your treatment is a collaboration between you and your practitioner. They are there to help you realize your vision, and every medical aesthetic treatment should always begin with a consultation, allowing you to communicate what you want and, in turn, understand the best treatment(s) for your specific needs. If at any point you feel uncomfortable or believe your questions haven’t been fully answered, it may be time to consider finding a new provider.
What Happens During Treatment?
The first step, as previously mentioned, is a consultation. Once you’ve decided on a plan, you’ll want to take the preemptive step of avoiding certain medications for one week pre-treatment. Your practitioner will review these medications and supplements with you, but they primarily consist of anticoagulants and anti-inflammatories, which may prolong bleeding.
Just before treatment, the area will be cleaned, and you may be given a topical anesthetic to numb the area where the fillers will be injected. Once that’s done, it’s time to gently begin injecting the fillers. The needles used for injections are quite fine, and we add lidocaine to our products for a more pain-free experience.
Are There Things I Need To Do For After Care?
Immediately after your treatment, your practitioner may offer you an ice pack to use for a brief period, to help alleviate any post-injection swelling that may occur. You may notice some post-treatment tenderness, redness, swelling, or bruising in the injected area, but this is usually mild and will typically diminish daily, likely resolving entirely within about a week.
Ultimately, the best part of a non-surgical facelift is that you can return to your normal activities immediately after your appointment; there’s no downtime.
You will want to keep in mind and avoid:
Applying makeup for about twelve hours
Sunbathing and exposure to high temperatures for approximately one week

What Can I Expect After Treatment and From My Fillers?
Irrefutably, the best part of the non-surgical face lift is the fact that there’s really little to no downtime at all, but… do they last?
Dermal Fillers are pretty much instant. You begin to see results immediately after the injection, and they continue to improve from there, with fillers taking up to four weeks to fully integrate into the tissue.
Generally, the effects of dermal fillers can last anywhere from six months to one year. It depends on the product being used, the location on the body where the product is being injected, and the individual's skin disposition.
This isn’t a manicure; these are results that last!
But What About Those Bad Jobs…
The best way to avoid the overfilled look is to seek out skilled practitioners and clinics with a proven track record, read their reviews, and examine their credentials, because in every profession, there are individuals who overpromote themselves beyond their actual skill.
Other ways to avoid the over-filled look include:
Prioritize Facial Balancing Over Volume
Facial balancing provides a harmonious, natural look. When people choose to go over the top with something like lip filler, the filled area stands out and becomes unbalanced with the rest of the face, contributing to the overfilled look.
Inject Smaller Amounts, Gradually, Over Time
By giving yourself time between treatments and the ability to see the changes more gradually, you may avoid going too far. Listen to your experienced practitioner and take baby steps. Taking your time is good self-care.
