Is Microneedling safe for dark skin?

Updated: Jan 14, 2023

Many women with dark skin suffer from hyperpigmentation.

Hyperpigmentation is a condition where the skin becomes darker in colour than usual.

The answer is yes when asked if Microneedling is safe for dark skin. Microneedling only punctures the surface layer of the skin so that the treatment won't create scarring.

Microneedling is a procedure where sterile needles make precise microchannels in the skin, stimulating collagen for healthier skin. Secret Faces uses SkinPen®, the first FDA-cleared microneedling device. SkinPen® uses disposable needle cartridges, so it is very sanitary.

Treatment Expectations
Before your first appointment, you may have a few jitters, but not to worry. It is a comfortable treatment and based on your needs, a topical numbing agent to the treatment area may be applied.

The process is relatively painless. The treatment will take about 30 minutes. Most patients report feeling only the slight vibration of SkinPen® during the procedure.

As the needling happens, the scariest part is the pinpoint bleeding. It’s not normal to have a pen gliding across your face that can produce tiny points of blood on your face. Don’t be alarmed. Pinpoint bleeding indicates that the microchannels are deep enough to stimulate collagen.

Care of your skin after treatment.
After treatment, we suggest gentle skin care and avoiding acids, exfoliants, or retinoids for a minimum of five days post-procedure. The skin will appear slightly pink to red immediately post-procedure.

Don't skip sunscreen. This step is essential to your skin healing because the skin is more susceptible to hyperpigmentation from sun exposure. And that would defeat the purpose of your treatment.

How many treatments do you need to see results?
We suggest three treatments spaced over a 4-6 week time period. For deep wrinkles, advanced photo-aging, stretch marks, and acne scars, it is recommended to receive 6-8 sessions at 6-week intervals.

Most patients notice healthier-looking skin immediately. However, the natural repair process of your own skin continues to progress over the course of several weeks. Keep in mind dermal collagen remodelling takes place over time; it is not realistic to expect damage that has occurred over an extended period to disappear immediately. You may not see the final result until up to 6 months following your final session.

Secret Faces provides the best in medical-grade skincare. At your treatment session, Darlene will discuss your aftercare and the best products to use for the maintenance of your skin.
