Is Microneedling safe for dark skin?

Many women with dark skin battle with hyperpigmentation.

Hyperpigmentation is a condition in which patches of skin become darker in colour than the normal surrounding skin.

When we are asked if Microneedling is safe for dark skin, the answer is yes. Microneedling only punctures the surface layer of the skin, so the treatment won’t create scarring.

Microneedling is a procedure where a device with sterile needles is used to make precise microchannels in the skin, which stimulates collagen to create healthy skin. Secret Faces uses SkinPen®, the first FDA-cleared microneedling device used exclusively by healthcare professionals. SkinPen® is more sanitary because it uses disposable needle cartridges.

What to expect at your treatment.
Before your first appointment, you may have a few jitters, but not to worry. It is a comfortable treatment, and based on your needs, a topical numbing agent to the treatment area may be applied.
The process is pretty painless. The treatment will take about 30 minutes. Most patients report feeling only the slight vibration of SkinPen® during the procedure.

As the needling happens, the most alarming part is the pinpoint bleeding. It’s not normal to have a pen gliding across your face that can produce tiny points of blood on your face. Don’t be alarmed. It’s actually a good thing. Pinpoint bleeding is a great sign that the microchannels are deep enough to stimulate collagen.

How to take care of your skin after treatment.
After treatment, we suggest using gentle skin care and avoiding acids, exfoliants, or retinoids of any kind for a minimum of five days post-procedure. The skin will appear slightly pink to red immediately post-procedure.

If you’re tempted to skip sunscreen: don’t. This step is essential to your skin healing because the skin is more susceptible to hyperpigmentation from sun exposure. And that would defeat the purpose of your treatment.

How many treatments do you need to see results?
It is recommended to have 3 treatments, one 4-6 weeks apart. For patients with deep wrinkles, advanced photo-aging, stretch marks, and acne scars, it is recommended to receive 6-8 sessions at 6-week intervals.

Most patients notice healthier-looking skin immediately. However, the natural repair process of your own skin continues to progress over the course of several weeks. Keep in mind dermal collagen remodelling takes place over time; it is not realistic to expect damage that has occurred over an extended period to disappear immediately. You may not see the final result until up to 6 months following your final session.

Secret Faces provides the best in medical-grade skincare. At your treatment session, Darlene will discuss your aftercare and the best products to use for the maintenance of your skin.
